Contraindication for Vaccination in Children

The medicines used for the standard vaccination schedule have minimal contraindications. These are identified by the paediatricians during an examination.

Children should not be vaccinated or revaccinated in the following cases:

• acute illnesses;
• acute conditions of chronic pathologies;
• allergic reactions to vaccine components;
• recent trauma or surgery;
• immune system disorders (e.g. HIV, recent radiation or chemotherapy).

Preparation

A visit to your paediatrician is compulsory before vaccination. The doctor will explain why vaccination is necessary, how the vaccines work, what rules must be observed before and after vaccination and what possible adverse reactions and symptoms require medical attention.

In order to rule out contraindications and to prepare for the vaccination, a specialist collects the patient's anamnesis, learns about the particularities of birth and development, examines the vaccination records of previous vaccinations, and conducts thermometry, auscultation and examination of mucous membranes and skin. If necessary, laboratory tests are carried out (general blood and urine tests). If the child is registered with a neurologist or other specialist, this doctor will also approve the vaccination.

Once the preparations have been completed, the paediatrician will refer the child to a vaccination clinic. To ensure that the vaccination is successful, experts recommend to:

• avoid contact with sick people;
• avoid prolonged exposure to the sun;
• avoid introducing new foods into your child's diet, especially those to which you have had an allergic reaction in the past; 
• minimize the amount of time they spend in crowded places;
• monitor the stool (to avoid constipation and diarrhoea);
• take a temperature the night before and on the day of the vaccination (if the temperature rises, you should consult your doctor).

After vaccination, you should:

• ensure a comfortable microclimate in the child's room (temperature ー 18-20°C, humidity ー 50-70%);
• avoid stress, excessive mental, emotional and physical stress for 3 days;
• introduce easily digestible food into the diet, do not overfeed the child;
• avoid bathing if the child has a fever;
• do not go to the swimming pool, beach, sports facilities, baths or saunas;
• tell your paediatrician if you notice any side effects or unusual reactions;
• visit your paediatrician on the day of the vaccination to check your child's condition after the vaccination.
