How to Treat Attention Disorder?

In today’s context, the parents, educators and teachers more often deal with hyperactivity and attention deficit disorders in children. Don't know how to deal with the problem, which specialist to contact and how to treat the attention deficit disorder? The doctors at the Centre for Brain Stimulation (CBS) can help.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or simply attention deficit disorder is a developmental disorder caused by neurological and behavioural abnormalities in which the excitation process in the brain dominate over the inhibitory process. Attention deficits usually first appear in children between the ages of 4 and 7. Without timely correction, ADHD can have serious consequences.

Attention Disorder Classification in Children

There are several forms of attention: sensory attention (auditory, visual, etc.), motor attention (awareness and regulation of motor processes), emotional attention (emotionally significant stimuli), and intellectual attention (mental processes). The classification of attention disorders is based on the clinical manifestations of ADHD.

Types of Attention t Disorder:

  • inattentive type — manifested by absent-mindedness, withdrawal, fantasies;
  • hyperactive type — is characterized by impulsiveness, heightened motor excitability, emotional instability;
  • mixed type — combines signs of Attention Deficit Disorder and Hyperactivity Disorder.

The following forms of attention disorder are distinguished:

  • Aprosexia.
    This is a complete "shutdown" of attention and concentration, the impossibility of attracting it by any means.
  • Hyperprosexia.
    This is pathologically excessive concentration of attention on particular objects, phenomena, thoughts, sensations.
  • Hypermetamorphosis.
    Deficiency of attention, up to its almost complete absence, increased distractibility, inconsistency of judgment and thinking, lack of logic, confusion.
  • Paraprosexia.
    Attention deficit disorder is characterized by a strenuous search for the desired object of attention.

Attention Disorder Causes

The causes of attention disorders are poorly understood. A large proportion of researchers believe that they are due to genetic changes and to an uncoordinated function of the parts of the brain that regulate behaviour and control attention.

Causes of Attention Deficit Disorder:

  • obstructed labour;
  • head injury;
  • hereditary burden;
  • abnormal gestation course;
  • smoking during pregnancy; consumption of alcoholic beverages, psychotropic substances, narcotic drugs and medicines harmful to the fetus;
  • unfavourable interfamilial situation;
  • stressful situations and other socio-psychological factors.

Attention disorders are present in the clinical picture of infectious diseases, arterial hypertension, endocrine disorders, psychiatric disorders (bipolar afferent disorder, schizophrenia), neuroses (hysteria, neurasthenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder).

Clinical Aspects

The first symptoms of hyperactivity and attention deficit disorder may appear at an early age (1.5-2 years).

A neurologist should be consulted in the following cases:

  • quickly get tired;
  • has begun to hold his/her head, crawl, stand or walk early;
  • is afraid of bright lights, loud noises and other people;
  • cannot fall asleep for long, sleeps restlessly;
  • has unexplained tantrums.

Attention Disorder Symptoms:

  • hyperactivity;
  • impulsivity;
  • restlessness;
  • fidgeting;
  • forgetfulness;
  • impatience;
  • inattention and absent-mindedness;
  • distractibility and inability to concentrate.

In schoolchildren and adolescents can be manifested by restlessness, sloppiness in completing tasks, noisy antics during lessons, shouting from the floor, and a tendency to have conflicts and fights with their peers.

Signs of Attention Deficit Disorder in Children:

  • facial asymmetry;
  • dysarthria (speech impairment);
  • impaired observation;
  • oculomotor disorders;
  • impaired fine motor skills and coordination of movements;
  • defects in emotional development;
  • headaches.

Attention Disorder Consequences

Attention deficit disorder leads to problems with reading and writing. The child cannot cope with learning tasks and makes many mistakes. There is social maladaptation, which manifests itself in difficulty in being around people, but they also tend to seek leadership. They tend to clash with peers and elders.

The child interferes with others' communication and actions, behaves unpredictably, takes someone else's things, and reacts inappropriately to external stimuli. Adolescents do not recognize authority figures and are prone to antisocial behaviour, drinking and drug use. Boys and girls do not adapt well to the world around them.

Attention Disorder Diagnostics

In order to prescribe the correct and effective treatment for attention deficit disorder, the doctor must carry out a comprehensive examination. Diagnosis includes taking a medical history, assessing the child's behaviour and conducting a neurological examination. Diagnostic questionnaires designed for different ages of children are used to analyze the psychological state. EEG, ultrasound and MRI examinations are prescribed to examine the brain.

At the Centre for Brain Stimulation, Conners-3 diagnostics are carried out. The test takes 1-1.5 hours. It is carried out by a psychologist in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere, which allows for accurate results.

MOXO diagnostic is also an effective method. It is available in two versions: for children aged 6 to 12 and for adolescents over the age of 13. It consists of several levels. Its duration is 14.5 minutes. The results allow the identification of numerical indicators of ADHD symptoms.

Attention Disorder Treatment

Attention deficit disorders are treated under the supervision of a paediatrician after consultation with a child psychiatrist and neurologist. A consultation with a speech therapist must be prescribed in the case of delayed psycho-speech development.

Attention Disorder Treatment Methods:

  • psychotherapy;
  • neurocorrection;
  • medication;
  • inTime;
  • BAC (Bioacoustic Correction);
  • Tomatis (auditory training method).

Attention Disorder Preventive Measures

To prevent concentration disorders in the child, it is important to follow daily routines and sleep and rest patterns. If possible, play and emotional games before going to bed should be avoided. Nutrition plays an important role. The child's diet should contain sufficient vitamins and trace elements.
